Square Root Calculator
Enter a number to get its decimal square root and, for whole numbers, the simplified radical form.
Decimal and radical results
Every non-negative number has a square root. Perfect squares (like 4, 9, 16) have whole-number roots. Other numbers have irrational roots, which this tool shows as a rounded decimal and, when the input is a whole number, as an exact simplified radical such as 6√2.

Frequently asked questions
What is a square root?
The square root of a number x is the value that, when multiplied by itself, gives x. For example, the square root of 25 is 5 because 5 × 5 = 25.
What is simplified radical form?
It rewrites a square root by pulling out the largest perfect-square factor. For example √72 = √(36 × 2) = 6√2. This calculator shows both the decimal value and the simplified radical.
Can it handle non-perfect squares?
Yes. It gives the decimal approximation and, for whole numbers, the exact simplified radical form.
